Tory aim of 'Excellence' is meaningless

12.00.00am GMT Sun 17th Jul 2005

The Tory Leader of Bromley's aim for Bromley to be an 'excellent' Council has been exposed as meaningless by Liberal Democrat Leader Cllr David McBride.

For several months the Tories have said that their aim is for the Council to be seen as excellent by it's residents, although not by the local government inspectors, which have previously labelled the Tory run Council as 'weak'. However, when pressed by Cllr McBride on what he views as 'excellent' the Tory Leader could not give an answer.

Cllr David McBride commented, "The aim of excellence for Bromley Council is a commendable one and one that all parties would aspire to. However, the Tories have made it clear that they are not aiming to be an excellent Council in the eyes of the local government inspectorate, like neighbouring Bexley. If that is the case, I am surprised that despite pressing the point three times in the same meeting with the Council Leader, I could not get an answer as to where he thinks we are now, what 'excellent' would mean and how he would know when the Council reaches its aim. This shows his aim is meaningless and has more to do with publicity than substance."
