Bromley Council is set to provide recycling facilities in all local schools, following a call by Biggin Hill's Liberal Democrat Councillor, Bob Shekyls.

"If we train children to care about the environment from an early age it will become second nature throughout their lives," said Cllr Shekyls after moving an amendment at last week's Council meeting.

"We need to increase recycling in Bromley," added Cllr Shekyls, "schools generate waste paper and the Council should be make recycling easy for them."

The Council was debating the unsatisfactory results of a MORI poll, which shows that Bromley residents are disappointed with the Council on many environmental issues. The Liberal Democrats were highlighting various changes, which would improve the tidiness of the street scene and local environment.

Cllr Chris Maines said after the meeting, "This will be an important step to improve recycling but the Council can still do more. Recycling facilities are not available for businesses in the borough nor for residents living in flats, who do not get recycling boxes."

"It is clear that by increasing the amount of waste that is recycled the Council can save money and help the environment. We all benefit." added Cllr Maines.

The Council will be providing all Bromley schools with lockable paper banks from September.
