Liberal Democrats Celebrate Election Success10.04.00am BST (GMT +0100) Sun 13th Jun 2004
Bromley Liberal Democrats are celebrating success in the June 10th elections. In every election held locally, Liberal Democrats scored more votes than last time, with a 2% swing from the Conservatives to the Liberal Democrats across the borough - more than enough to defeat the Conservatives in the Orpington Parliamentary seat and to defeat several Conservative and Labour councillors across the Borough. Labour were humiliated in our local GLA seat, slipping from second place in 2000 to FOURTH, behind UKIP. Duncan Borrowman claimed second place for the Liberal Democrats. London wide, the Liberal Democrats increased their London Assembly members from 4 to 5. There was more good news in the European elections, where Sarah Ludford comfortably retained her seat in the European Parliament. Commenting, Duncan Borrowman said "I'd like to thank the 29,000+ voters who placed their trust in me. This is a great result for the Liberal Democrats, and one that should give no comfort to Labour or the Conservatives." Local LibDem leader Chris Maines said "I'm delighted with the Liberal Democrat performance on Thursday. We have more MEPs and more GLA members than ever before. The local results are very promising for our chances of winning Orpington from the Conservatives, and also show that it is the Liberal Democrats who are the real challengers to the Conservatives in Bromley and Beckenham."
