Maines Marches Against Fees8.08.21pm GMT Sun 26th Oct 2003
Local Liberal Democrat leader Cllr Chris Maines today joined thousands of students in central London to march against tuition fees and the government's plans for 'top-up' fees. Chris said 'This is an issue which affects thousands of Orpington families and their children. I wanted to join the march to show my opposition to fees. Students end up in thousands of pounds of debt under the present system, which is no way for them to begin their working life' 'Liberal Democrats have fully-costed plans to abolish fees and reintroduce a grant, which would make a real difference for students'
Chris was joined by Simon Hughes MP, the Liberal Democrat candidate for London Mayor, David Rendel MP, the Liberal Democrat higher education spokesman and a large group of Liberal Democrat student members. The march was organised by the National Union of Students, with support from the ATL and NATFHE higher eduction unions. There was a large group of Liberal Democrat Youth and Student members on the march. Click the link at the bottom of the menu on the left to view photos of the event
